Recent development in space exploration has focused on the possibility of a mission to Mars. How can we design for such an unexplored environment and in turn what might that design tell us about designing for the everyday? In collaboration with Verindi Vekemans and Mirthe Visscher, we have made use of a process of speculative first-person design to create a material playground for producing a set of printed textile structures to support the experience of Martian daily wear. While at the same time paying attention to Earthly concerns such as material scarcity and local resources. This project describes the outcomes of this process with a focus on personal safety, empowerment, and comfort. The suit consists of 3D printed materials and glass fiber, constructed together using ultrasonic welding.
The video below shows the suit in context on earth, by exploring different hostile environments in our everday world.
