Product innovation can help people in their day-to-day, to offer them comfort, joy, and self-expression. Therefore, I believe design should be used as a tool to support people in their physical and mental health. Industrial design can offer the right balance between engineering and design. To create products with features that offer an enjoyable user experience and are created with sustainable materials.
Product design can have a positive impact on climate change when the right production processes are chosen. Fast fashion is an example of a negative driver of environmental pollution, as the supply chain model focuses on matching trends that shift every three to five weeks. Clothes are in return often disregarded before the end of their lifespan. Excessive consumerism is therefore the most substantial cause of the large amount of clothing waste. To change the impact of fashion on our planet, designers and consumers must look at their behavior and make thoughtful decisions every day to take care of the earth we live on. I believe it is the role of academic designers and engineers to research and develop new materials and products that are environmentally friendly. Industrial designers should demonstrate how meaningful innovation can be in people's daily lives by making it easier for them to support our ecosystem.
I believe that the design process should start with a material-driven research approach. Researching material structures and their means to mechanically offer functionality can offer products containing inherent qualities, without requiring the integration of electronics. I hope to make product innovation and circular production available to a broad public. Ultimately, starting with mechanical qualities can help design products that are either created with a circular lifecycle or that last multiple lifetimes.
